I do like to use a bit of color, which doesn’t affect the parsing process, and I format the resumes to be easy for a human to read, as well as the parsing software. It is for those reasons that the resume formatting I use is fairly simple – one column, no graphs, no text boxes, clear section headers, reverse chronological order. The challenge is that it is virtually impossible to know for sure which companies are using what ATS technologies and how long it’s been, if ever, that they’ve been upgraded. Really old parsing software requires the name of a company, a job title, a set of dates and at least 25 words to recognize an entry as a job, for example.Īlternatively, the company may have purchased access to ATS in the cloud, which may have be upgraded yesterday with the newest AI technologies and advanced parsing abilities. If the system never broke, or if they have in-house developers that can patch up the 15-year-old software and keep it running, they may have never upgraded or changed it. When they first came on the market, companies would spend tens of thousands to buy and install the software and then get HR trained on the system. Those experiences have taught me a great deal about resume parsing and I format the resumes I write specifically with parsing in mind.Īn important consideration to keep in mind is that parsing software and ATS have been around for years. I’ve worked with the team at HireAbility, as well as a company called Preptel, who was, for several years, also working with three of the parsing software makers on a resume optimization product that I thought showed promise, but that ultimately didn’t get funding. There are only a handful of major companies (DaXtra, HireAbility, Hiretual, SOVREN and Textkernel) that make resume-parsing software. ![]() When the parsing software sees something familiar, they place that content into the right spot in your applicant file. The algorithms start at the top of the resume and look down for things they’ve been programmed to look for, like your name, phone number, education, etc. What is resume parsing software? It’s a bunch of algorithms meant to look for certain elements in the data stream that begins when you hit the resume upload button to apply for a job. ![]() I’ve discovered that most do-it-yourself writers don’t realize that the pretty resume template they’re considering using won’t reliably get their summary/profile, experience, education and/or certification sections into the employer’s ATS. ![]() While I predominantly write resumes for people using the resume format that I’ve evolved over the years (which, of course, works just fine with parsing software), I also provide resume critiques and templates to those seeking do-it-yourself options. They acknowledged this issue and yet, two years later, nothing has changed. While talking with them, I shared my concern that about 95% of the resume templates on the Microsoft website do not work with applicant tracking systems (ATS). ![]() A couple of years ago, a member of the Microsoft Word Template team reached out to me after seeing an article I’d been quoted in in the Seattle Times.
